    PS5 emulation in 2026: a crash course

As of October 2026 several open-source projects can boot real PS5 games on PCs, but none is close to broad compatibility: the games that run well are mostly small titles.[1][2] Progress has been fast because the PS5 uses an x86-64 processor like a PC, so emulators can run game code natively and concentrate on the console's system software and graphics.[3]

    Editor reviewedUpdated GamingTech policy

PS5 emulation means running PlayStation 5 games on other hardware, usually a Windows, Linux or macOS PC. For years the scene was largely dormant;[4] in 2026 it became several active open-source projects. SharpEmu became community-driven on 15 July 2026 and KytyPS5 published its source code the next day.[5] This crash course covers what exists, how it works, what the law allows, and a dated tracker of milestones. This page does not link to game files, firmware or keys, and it does not explain how to get around copy protection.

    Start here: the crash course

    1. How console emulation works: why emulating a PS5 differs from emulating older consoles. See How console emulation works.
    2. shadps4: the most mature PlayStation emulator of this generation. It emulates the PS4, not the PS5, but it sets the benchmark.
    3. Is it legal? Emulators, firmware, keys and piracy, from Sony v. Connectix to the Yuzu settlement. See Is console emulation legal?.
    4. Live tracker: dated project milestones through October 2026. See the PS5 emulation tracker.

The main projects in October 2026

Three projects matter most. SharpEmu is an experimental PS5 emulator written from scratch in C#.[6] KytyPS5 is a PS5 emulator written in C++ and based on a heavily modified version of an older emulator, Kyty.[7] AnyPS5 is not an emulator at all: it converts PS5 game programs into native Windows or Linux programs.[8] All three are early and unstable.

    • SharpEmu (C#) loads a game’s main executable, runs its CPU instructions natively and partly handles graphics.[9] Its developers say they care more about accuracy and infrastructure than about getting particular games working.[6] The latest release as of 10 October 2026 was v0.0.5-nexus-release.2.[10]
    • KytyPS5 (C++) can boot 2D games and some 3D games built with Unreal Engine 4/5, Unity and custom engines.[11] It outputs through Vulkan 1.3 and decodes the PS5’s RDNA 2 GPU instructions itself.[12] The original Kyty was abandoned in 2022 and revived in 2026 as a PS5-only fork.[13]
    • AnyPS5 relinks PS5 executables into native formats, supplies its own versions of the system libraries, and runs no emulator process.[8] It recompiles shaders to SPIR-V for Vulkan.[14]
    • RPCSX, from the developers of the PS3 emulator RPCS3, was described in July 2026 as a research project rather than a game-ready emulator.[15]

What actually runs, and how well

As of 10 October 2026, SharpEmu’s own compatibility summary listed 91 tested titles out of 9,176 tracked, with 54 reaching gameplay and 37 rated playable.[16] Its developer has said that none of the “playable” games had been tested from start to finish.[17] The six games that reached 60 frames per second in September were lighter titles such as Dreaming Sarah and Tetris Forever.[2]

The large exclusives are much further behind. A KytyPS5 build reached gameplay in Marvel’s Wolverine, but only at a single-digit frame rate.[18] KytyPS5 ran the PS5 version of GTA V at about 40 to 60 frames per second on a high-end PC, then crashed after the opening mission.[19] On a Steam Deck, SharpEmu booted Astro’s Playroom at around 0.5 to 1 frame per second.[20] AnyPS5 had verified one game, Dreaming Sarah, at a stable 60 frames per second.[21]

    Legality and safety in brief

A US federal appeals court held in 2000 that reverse-engineering a console’s BIOS to build a compatible emulator can be fair use.[22] Circumventing copy protection, or trafficking in tools built to do so, is a separate matter under Section 1201 of the US Copyright Act.[23][24] KytyPS5 and AnyPS5 say they ship no copyrighted Sony software and tell users to use only game files they obtained legally.[25][26] The legality analysis covers this in more detail. This page is not legal advice.

Imitation sites are a practical risk. SharpEmu says only sharpemu.app and the links in its GitHub repository are official.[27] A September 2026 guide described sites offering “PCSX5” and “PCSX4” as scams that take money.[28]

    Questions readers ask

Is there a working PS5 emulator?

Several projects can boot real PS5 games, but none is close to broad compatibility. In late September 2026 SharpEmu had 12 of 55 tested games reaching gameplay and six playable at 60 frames per second, mostly lighter titles.[1][2]

    Is shadPS4 a PS5 emulator?

No. shadPS4 describes itself as a PlayStation 4 emulator. SharpEmu says it focuses only on the PS5 and leaves PS4 emulation to shadPS4.[29][6]

Can PS5 emulators run big exclusives like Marvel's Wolverine?

Only barely. A KytyPS5 build reached gameplay in Marvel's Wolverine in late September 2026, but at a single-digit frame rate.[18]

Why is PS5 emulation moving faster than older consoles?

The PS5 uses an AMD Zen 2 x86-64 processor, so emulators on PCs can run its CPU instructions natively rather than translating a different instruction set.[3]

Are websites selling PS5 emulators legitimate?

Be cautious. SharpEmu says only sharpemu.app and its GitHub links are official, and a September 2026 guide described "PCSX5" and "PCSX4" sites as scams that take money.[27][28]
