BioMADE
Also known as Bioindustrial Manufacturing and Design Ecosystem
BioMADE is a Manufacturing USA institute that builds national infrastructure for taking biotechnology from the laboratory to commercial production.[1] Its first demonstration facility, a $132 million site in Maple Grove, Minnesota with two 25,000-litre fermenters, was finalised in April 2025, with pilot sites in Hayward, California and near Ames, Iowa following.[2][3][4]
Key facts
What it is
BioMADE is a Manufacturing USA institute focused on bioindustrial manufacturing. Its stated purpose is to establish national infrastructure for scaling biotechnology from laboratory development to commercial production, which in practice means shared fermentation plants that no single startup could finance alone.[1] Funding comes chiefly from the US Department of Defense, which provided about $87 million at the institute’s inception and directed a further $450 million in 2023.[5]
The capacity argument
The institute frames the problem as a missing rung on the ladder between bench and factory. It says the shortage of pilot- to demonstration-scale capacity forces American companies to seek facilities overseas, taking American innovation with them and risking loss of intellectual property.[6] Its chief executive has said the United States has led biotechnology research for more than 40 years but needs additional assets to bring innovations from the laboratory to commercial production.[7] Independent reporting agrees on the diagnosis, describing the country as severely short of pilot- and demonstration-scale precision fermentation equipment.[8]
The sites
The anchor project is in Maple Grove, Minnesota: a $132 million investment finalised on 29 April 2025, funded by the Department of Defense and Minnesota’s economic development department, covering 122,000 square feet with two 25,000-litre industrial fermenters for demonstration-scale piloting.[2]
The wider Pilot Plant Network has three sites. Hayward, California is a nearly 25,000-square-foot multi-user plant with aerated stirred tanks of up to 4,000 litres, in a project worth at least $80 million funded by the Department of Defense; BioMADE said in April 2025 that it aimed to open it to customers in early 2026.[3] The Iowa site near Ames, operated with Iowa State University, is 15,000 square feet with 5,000 and 10,000-litre fermenters, in a $40 million project to which BioMADE committed at least $20 million, matched by up to $10 million from the university and $10 million from a state infrastructure programme.[4] Published schedules have shifted, so dates are plans rather than commitments: BioMADE said in August 2025 that Iowa would open in early 2028, and at the November 2025 groundbreaking that it was scheduled to open in 2027.[9] BioMADE describes the network as critically needed pilot-scale capacity to move products out of the laboratory and into commercial and defence markets.[10]
Context
BioMADE’s build-out matches the direction of federal policy advice. A congressionally created commission delivered 49 recommendations in April 2025 and called for at least $15 billion of US investment in biotechnology innovation and biomanufacturing.[11][12] Research funding moved in the same period: in April 2026 the Department of Defense and the National Science Foundation directed $21.4 million to 14 bioengineering research projects.[13]
Government demand also shows up on company income statements. Government and defence customers accounted for 45% of Ginkgo Bioworks’ revenue in the second quarter of 2026 and 41% in the first half, its largest customer group.[14]
What is unresolved
Whether shared plants fix the gap depends on utilisation. BioMADE publishes each site’s size, cost and target opening date, but capacity bookings, tech-transfer times and cost per run are not in its releases.[3][4] The debate over whether public tankage or private capital should close the scale-up gap is covered in the precision fermentation page and in this field’s scale-up analysis.[8]
Questions readers ask
What does BioMADE do?
It is a Manufacturing USA institute for bioindustrial manufacturing that works to build national infrastructure for taking biotechnology from the lab to commercial production.[1]
How big are its fermenters?
Its Minnesota demonstration facility has two 25,000-litre industrial fermenters; the Hayward pilot site uses 4,000-litre tanks and the Iowa site 10,000-litre tanks.[2][3][4]
Who pays for it?
Chiefly the US Department of Defense, which provided about $87 million at inception and directed a further $450 million in 2023; Minnesota's economic development department co-funded the Maple Grove site.[5][2]
Why does the United States want its own pilot plants?
BioMADE says the shortage of pilot- to demonstration-scale capacity pushes American companies to facilities overseas, taking innovation with them and risking loss of intellectual property.[6]
