When will fusion power reach the grid? The 2026 debate
Most fusion companies, and the US government, say fusion electricity will arrive in the 2030s. Helion targets 2028 for its Orion plant.[1][2][3] Skeptics point to ITER's slipped schedule, a facility-level energy deficit at NIF, a world tritium stock of about 20 kilograms and untested materials and blankets.[4][5][6][7]
The claims on the table
Several dated targets are public. Helion says its Orion plant in Washington is designed to deliver at least 50 megawatts and begin initial operations in 2028, under a power purchase agreement with Microsoft.[3][8] Commonwealth Fusion Systems expects its roughly 400-megawatt ARC plant in Virginia to deliver power in the early 2030s, and Google has agreed to buy 200 megawatts of its output.[9][10] China’s BEST tokamak is designed to demonstrate fusion electricity by around 2030.[11] General Fusion says it plans a first-of-a-kind plant around 2035.[12] The US Department of Energy’s roadmap aims for commercial fusion power on the grid by the mid-2030s.[2] In the Fusion Industry Association’s 2026 survey, 71 percent of companies expected the first commercial electricity in the 2030s.[1]
The case for the 2030s
Money and contracts have grown quickly. Fusion companies raised $4.48 billion in the year to July 2026, 56 companies reported over 16,000 employees, and total funding since 2021 reached $14.24 billion.[13][14] Key physics and technology steps have been demonstrated. NIF has reached ignition 11 times.[15] HTS magnets reached 20 tesla in 2021.[16] Tokamaks have held plasmas for over 1,000 seconds.[17][18] CFS said in August 2026 that SPARC was almost 80 percent complete.[19] Regulators are building fusion-specific rules: the NRC proposed one in February 2026, and in June 2026 Helion said Washington State had granted it licences for its plant.[20][21]
Autumn 2026 added public money and legislation. Germany launched a milestone-based programme on 7 October 2026, with 500 million euros by 2029 and total public funding intended to reach as much as 2.5 billion euros, structured so that companies missing a milestone leave the programme.[22][23] Japan’s METI runs a comparable scheme worth about 60 billion yen over three years.[24] In the United States, a bipartisan House bill introduced on 24 September 2026 would add $10 billion in appropriations and create an Assistant Secretary of Fusion Energy, and a Senate permitting bill introduced on 30 September 2026 includes electricity-producing fusion machines.[25][26] Capital markets opened too: General Fusion listed on Nasdaq on 13 July 2026, and CFS said in July 2026 that it had raised $4 billion in total.[27][28] On the public machine, ITER took delivery of its ninth and final vacuum vessel sector on 5 October 2026, completing the core components on site.[29]
Supporters argue that compact high-field magnets, private capital and lighter regulation have changed the pace of the field. In their view, ITER’s schedule no longer sets the timeline for the whole industry. The signed power purchase agreements show that large buyers are willing to commit, although they do not show that the machines will work. The 2026 wave of milestone-based public funding in Germany and Japan cuts both ways: it is new money, but its structure assumes that some funded approaches will fail.
The case for caution
The flagship public project has slipped. ITER abandoned a 2025 first plasma and now plans deuterium-tritium operation in 2039, four years later than its 2016 plan. It cited component difficulties, quality problems and over-optimistic planning.[4][30] Ignition at NIF is measured at the target: its lasers draw roughly 300 to 400 megajoules from the grid per shot.[5] ITER puts the world’s tritium inventory at around 20 kilograms, and D-T plants must breed more tritium than they burn.[6][31] Materials for 14 MeV neutrons cannot easily be tested in fission reactors, and the dedicated IFMIF-DONES source only started construction in 2023.[32][33] The DOE itself lists open gaps in materials, plasma-facing components, the fuel cycle, blankets and plant integration.[7] Several private milestones, including Helion’s D-T result and General Fusion’s 1 keV result, are company-reported and not yet independently verified.[34][35]
For skeptics, the gap between a physics milestone and a power plant is the core problem. A plant needs net electricity, a closed tritium fuel cycle and components that survive years of neutron bombardment, and none of these has yet been shown together in one machine. On this view, early plants may well run, but reliable, economic grid power is likely to take longer than the most aggressive targets suggest.
What would settle it
The next two to three years offer concrete tests. If SPARC reaches Q>1, that would be strong evidence for the compact high-field tokamak path; CFS targets 2027 for it and said in October 2026 that operations would start in coming months, without publishing a first-plasma date.[36][37][38] If Polaris shows electricity production, as Helion says it is designed to, the 2028 Orion target would look more plausible.[39] A final NRC rule would settle the US licensing route; none had been dated as of October 2026.[40] If these slip, timelines are likely to move into the late 2030s. These are judgements about probabilities, not firm predictions.
How results are verified now matters as much as the dates. Most 2026 private milestones were announced by the companies that achieved them, including Helion’s deuterium-tritium result and CFS’s completion percentage.[34][19] General Fusion’s October 2026 1 keV electron-temperature measurement was taken with the UK Atomic Energy Authority and written up in a paper co-authored with it and submitted for peer review, which is a stronger form of evidence than a press release.[41] A reader tracking these timelines can reasonably weight claims by who checked them, and watch whether the pattern of joint measurement with public laboratories spreads.
