Helion Energy
Also known as Helion
Helion Energy is a fusion company that magnetically compresses pulsed field-reversed configuration (FRC) plasmas. It aims to recover electricity directly, without a steam turbine.[1] It signed the first fusion power purchase agreement, with Microsoft, in 2023, and says it is building its Orion plant in Malaga, Washington, for initial operations in 2028. In February 2026 it reported measurable deuterium-tritium fusion on its Polaris prototype, a result not yet independently verified.[2][3][4]
Key facts
Approach
Helion does not build a tokamak. Its machines magnetically compress high-beta field-reversed configuration (FRC) plasmas in pulses. Helion aims to recover the fusion energy directly as electricity, rather than first converting it to heat for a steam turbine.[1] Because the machine is pulsed, Helion says it does not rely on the plasma sustaining itself through ignition.[5] Its long-term commercial fuel is deuterium and helium-3. Helion plans to produce the helium-3 in its own machines.[6]
Helion’s fuel choice differs from most of the field. Most machines plan to burn deuterium and tritium, which emits 14 MeV neutrons and requires tritium breeding.[7][8][9] Helion plans a closed-loop cycle that makes helium-3 in its own machines through deuterium-deuterium reactions and tritium decay.[6]
Polaris
Polaris is Helion’s prototype; Helion says it is designed to demonstrate electricity production from fusion.[10] On 13 February 2026 Helion said Polaris was the first privately developed fusion machine to demonstrate measurable deuterium-tritium fusion and had reached plasma temperatures of 150 million degrees Celsius. Helion also said it was the first company approved to possess and use tritium for demonstrating fusion energy.[4] These are company-reported results that have not yet been independently verified.[4]
Orion and Microsoft
On 10 May 2023 Helion signed what it called the world’s first fusion power purchase agreement, to supply Microsoft from its first plant. The plant was expected online by 2028 and targets at least 50 megawatts after a one-year ramp-up.[2] Constellation is the power marketer.[2] In July 2025 Helion began earthwork and construction at the site, named Orion, in Malaga, Washington.[11] Helion says Orion is designed to deliver at least 50 megawatts and begin initial operations in 2028.[3]
On 16 June 2026 Helion said Washington’s Department of Health had granted it a radioactive materials licence and a radioactive air emissions licence. Helion said this made it the first company to hold the regulatory licences needed for a fusion power plant.[12] Helion said the site’s assembly and office building was complete by then.[12]
Funding
On 4 June 2026 Helion announced a $465 million Series G led by Thrive Capital at a $15.5 billion post-money valuation, which it said brought total investment in the company to $1.5 billion; it later added that the round closed at $500 million in September 2026.[13] The Fusion Industry Association lists the June round among the industry’s largest, in a year when 56 fusion companies reported raising $4.48 billion.[14][15] All of Helion’s valuation and funding figures here are company statements.
External research programme
Helion also funds outside research. On 7 April 2026 it awarded $4 million under its HERCULES programme to 25 proposals across 20 institutions in the United States and United Kingdom, and said more than $17 million was committed through 2028, for work on materials, magnet systems and diagnostics.[16]
What to watch
Helion’s 2028 date is far earlier than iter‘s 2039 start of deuterium-tritium operation and CFS’s early-2030s target for ARC; commonwealth-fusion-systems targets its Q>1 physics milestone in 2027.[3][17][18][19] The next milestone to watch is whether Polaris shows electricity production, as Helion says it was designed to do.[10]
How far such company reports can be checked is the central problem for readers. Helion’s D-T result rests on its own announcement.[4] By contrast, General Fusion’s October 2026 1 keV electron-temperature result on LM26 was measured with the UK Atomic Energy Authority and described in a paper co-authored with it and submitted for peer review.[20][21] This page marks Helion’s own results as reported until an outside party confirms them. The wider argument about company timelines is set out in the fusion timeline debate.
Questions readers ask
How is Helion's approach different from a tokamak?
Helion compresses pulsed, high-beta field-reversed configuration plasmas with magnetic fields and aims to recover energy directly as electricity, without heat and a steam turbine.[1]
When will Helion deliver power to Microsoft?
Helion's 2023 agreement said the plant was expected online by 2028, targeting at least 50 MW after a one-year ramp-up. Helion says Orion is designed to begin initial operations in 2028.[2][3]
Has Helion produced fusion?
Helion said in February 2026 that its Polaris prototype was the first privately developed machine to demonstrate measurable deuterium-tritium fusion, reaching 150 million degrees Celsius. This is the company's own report and has not yet been independently verified.[4]
What fuel will Helion use?
Its long-term commercial fuel is deuterium and helium-3, with helium-3 produced in its own machines.[6]
How much has Helion raised, and at what valuation?
Helion announced a $465 million Series G on 4 June 2026, led by Thrive Capital at a $15.5 billion post-money valuation, bringing total investment to $1.5 billion. It later said the round closed at $500 million in September 2026. These are company figures.[13]
