    How close are solid-state batteries?

Several large companies target first solid-state vehicles or mass production in 2027-28, and pilot lines opened in 2026.[1][2][3] But materials problems remain, and cheap LFP and new sodium-ion cells keep raising the bar, so it is still unclear whether solid-state will reach the mass market this decade or start as a premium niche.[4][5][6]

    The promise

Solid-state batteries replace the liquid electrolyte with a solid. Reviews describe this as offering superior energy density and better safety, partly because the solid can block dendrites.[7] Today’s lithium-ion cells reach up to about 330 Wh/kg.[8] QuantumScape’s approach pairs a ceramic separator with a lithium-metal anode.[9]

    The industrial evidence

Toyota and Idemitsu agreed in 2023 to industrialise sulfide electrolytes for vehicle launches in 2027-28.[10] Idemitsu began building a pilot plant of several hundred tons a year in early 2026, due for completion at the end of 2027.[11] The IEA reports that Toyota plans its first all-solid-state vehicle by 2028. BYD plans a first EV from 2027 and mass production from 2030.[1] Samsung SDI targets mass production in the second half of 2027.[2] QuantumScape opened its Eagle Line pilot on 4 February 2026 and widened its licensing deal with Volkswagen’s PowerCo.[3][12]

    The technical and market headwinds

Each solid electrolyte family has a weakness. Sulfides suffer dendrite formation and a limited electrochemical window, oxides have interfacial resistance with lithium metal, and polymers have limited ionic conductivity.[4] Meanwhile incumbents keep getting cheaper. LFP packs averaged 81 dollars per kilowatt-hour in 2025, and the overall average was 108 dollars.[5][13] Sodium-ion reached a mass-production passenger car in February 2026.[6] China’s 2026 standard draws a line between hybrid solid-liquid batteries and all-solid-state ones, which affects which products can claim the label.[14]

    Reading the evidence

The dates have held steady. Toyota’s 2027-28 target dates from 2023, and in 2026 its electrolyte supplier began building a pilot plant. That is stronger evidence than a press-release roadmap alone. But the scale of what is being built points to a slow start. A pilot electrolyte plant of several hundred tons a year due at the end of 2027, and BYD’s own mass-production date of 2030, both suggest early solid-state cars will be low-volume, premium products. The materials problems in the literature are about interfaces and dendrites under real operating conditions. Those problems tend to show up as cost and yield issues in manufacturing, not as outright failures, so they bear most on price.

Solid-state’s competition is also moving. With LFP packs near 81 dollars per kilowatt-hour and sodium-ion entering cars, mass-market buyers already have cheap, safe options. That leaves solid-state’s clearest early market where energy density and fast charging command a premium.

    What may happen next

Over 2027-28, expect the first vehicles with all-solid-state cells from at least one major automaker, in limited volumes. The chance of solid-state reaching a significant share of EV batteries before 2030 looks low, given that BYD itself targets mass production only from 2030. Watch for shifts in stated timelines, yield and cost disclosures from pilot lines, and how products are classified under China’s new standard. Any of these could move this assessment.

Launches are on track for 2027-28

Industrial preparation is real: electrolyte plants are under construction, pilot lines are running and automakers have fixed dates.[11][3][2][1]

A niche start, mass market later

First launches will be small volumes; BYD itself does not plan mass production until 2030, and unresolved interface and dendrite problems make cost-competitive scale hard.[1][4][11]

    Incumbents keep moving the goalposts

LFP packs at about 81 dollars per kilowatt-hour and sodium-ion cars on sale shrink the market solid-state must win, whatever its technical progress.[5][6][13]

    Questions readers ask

When will solid-state batteries be in cars?

Toyota plans its first all-solid-state vehicle by 2028, BYD plans to sell one from 2027 with mass production from 2030, and Samsung SDI targets mass production in the second half of 2027.[1][2]

    What is still unsolved?

Sulfide electrolytes can still grow dendrites and have a limited electrochemical window, oxides have interfacial resistance with lithium metal, and polymers have low ionic conductivity.[4]

    Are "semi-solid" batteries solid-state?

Not under China's 2026 standard, which separates hybrid solid-liquid batteries from all-solid-state ones.[14]
