Fusion energy tracker: milestones toward fusion power

As of October 2026, NIF has reached ignition 11 times, every core component of the ITER machine is on site after the ninth vacuum-vessel sector arrived on 5 October, CFS says SPARC is almost 80 percent built and publicly targets Q>1 in 2027, and Helion has reported deuterium-tritium fusion, not yet independently verified, while building its Orion plant.[1][2][3][4][5] This page tracks dated milestones and the open questions that will decide when fusion power arrives.

    Where things stand

As of October 2026, fusion has passed several physics milestones, while the first power plants are still being built. Laser fusion at NIF reached ignition for the 11th time in June 2026.[1] Magnetic machines have run for over 1,000 seconds, and Wendelstein 7-X held a record triple product for 43 seconds.[6][7][8] The industry is in a build-out phase. CFS says SPARC is almost 80 percent complete, and Helion says it is building Orion.[3][9]

ITER passed a procurement landmark on 5 October 2026, when vacuum vessel sector #2, the ninth and last sector, was delivered. ITER said that with it, every component needed to complete the core machine is on site, while in-vessel components and plant systems are still to come.[2][10] Making the nine sectors was split between Europe, with five, and Korea, with four, and six years passed between the first delivery and the last.[11] Six of the nine sector modules were in the pit by 28 July 2026; module 9 is on the critical path, with sub-assembly due to finish by the end of November 2026 and transfer to the pit in early December.[12][13]

    Money and policy

Private money kept arriving. CFS said on 30 July 2026 that a further $1 billion of equity took its total raised to $4 billion, which it called about 30 percent of all fusion capital raised to date, and the largest fusion round since its own $1.8 billion Series B in 2021.[14][15] Helion announced a $465 million Series G in June 2026 at a $15.5 billion valuation and later said it closed at $500 million.[16] General Fusion became the first publicly listed fusion company on 13 July 2026, entering the market with about $150 million in cash.[17] Across the industry, 56 companies reported $4.48 billion raised in the year to July 2026.[18]

Governments moved in parallel. Germany’s SPRIND launched a milestone-based programme on 7 October 2026, with 500 million euros by 2029 and total public funding intended to reach as much as 2.5 billion euros; companies that miss a milestone leave the programme.[19][20] Japan’s METI runs a similar milestone scheme worth about 60 billion yen over three years, and Helical Fusion was named a final candidate on 31 August 2026.[21] In the United States, a bipartisan House bill introduced on 24 September 2026 would create an Assistant Secretary of Fusion Energy and add $10 billion in appropriations, and a Senate permitting bill introduced on 30 September 2026 includes electricity-producing fusion machines.[22][23]

    What to watch next

    • SPARC first plasma and Q>1. CFS does not publish a first-plasma date; it targets Q>1 in 2027 and said in October 2026 that operations would start “in coming months”. This is the first big test of hts-fusion-magnets in a net-energy machine.[4][24]
    • Polaris electricity. Helion says Polaris is designed to demonstrate electricity from fusion. Any result would bear on Orion’s 2028 date.[25][26]
    • ITER’s last three modules. Module 9 moves to the pit in December 2026, leaving one sector in the sub-assembly tool.[13]
    • Tritium breeding. ITER will host test blanket systems in two equatorial ports, and CFS joined UKAEA’s 220-million-pound LIBRTI programme in July 2026 to test breeding blankets.[27][28]
    • NIF’s laser upgrade. The Enhanced Yield Capability project aims for 20 percent more laser energy and yields of 30 MJ and beyond.[29]
    • China. BEST is under construction in Hefei and aims at net gain and an electricity demonstration around 2030; ENN reported hydrogen-boron reactions on EXL-50U in September 2026.[30][31]
    • Japan. Helical Fusion plans preliminary power-on tests of Helix HARUKA in 2027 and of the completed integrated facility around 2030.[32]
    • NRC final rule. The proposed byproduct-material framework for fusion machines closed for comment on 27 May 2026.[33]
    • Stellarator Alpha. Proxima Fusion and IPP’s demonstrator in Garching moves from agreement toward design and construction.[34]

    How this tracker is maintained

Company-only claims are marked “reported” until independently confirmed. Where a result was measured or co-published with a public laboratory, such as General Fusion’s LM26 temperature measurement with the UK Atomic Energy Authority, the entry says so.[35] Simulation and modelling deals are recorded as company announcements: CFS is building a SPARC digital twin with nvidia and Siemens, and leads a fusion project in the second phase of the US Department of Energy’s Genesis Mission.[36][37]

    Background: iter, national-ignition-facility, commonwealth-fusion-systems, helion-energy, stellarator.

    Questions readers ask

What is the latest NIF result?

NIF achieved ignition for the 11th time on 20 June 2026, with a yield of 7.9 megajoules and a target gain of about 3.8.[1]

    How far along is ITER?

On 28 July 2026 ITER installed the sixth of nine vacuum-vessel sector modules, almost six months ahead of schedule, and on 5 October 2026 the ninth and final vacuum vessel sector arrived on site, completing delivery of the core tokamak components. Sub-assembly of sector module 9 is due to finish by the end of November 2026, with transfer to the pit in early December.[12][2][13]

When will SPARC produce its first plasma?

CFS has not published a dated first-plasma milestone. Its public target is net energy, Q>1, in 2027, and in a blog post current in October 2026 it said it would start operating SPARC in coming months.[4][24]

Has any private company shown net fusion energy?

None of the sources used here report one. CFS aims for Q>1 with SPARC, which CFS said was almost 80 percent complete in August 2026. Helion has reported D-T fusion on Polaris, not yet independently verified, and says Polaris is designed to demonstrate electricity production. General Fusion reported a 1 keV electron temperature on LM26 in October 2026, measured with the UK Atomic Energy Authority.[59][3][5][25][35]

Which governments announced new fusion money in 2026?

Germany launched a milestone-based programme on 7 October 2026 with 500 million euros by 2029 and up to 2.5 billion euros in total. Japan's METI runs a milestone programme with about 60 billion yen over the three years to 2028. In the United States, a bipartisan bill introduced on 24 September 2026 would add $10 billion in direct appropriations.[19][21][22]
