In-car gaming tracker: automaker announcements and safety actions

In-car gaming has spread from Tesla, which launched Tesla Arcade in 2019,[1] to BMW, Audi and Volkswagen through AirConsole.[2] On 23 September 2026 Volkswagen said it would be the first volume brand to offer AirConsole in the US.[3] Safety has shaped the market: Tesla disabled its in-motion Passenger Play after an NHTSA investigation,[4] and most platforms limit play to parked cars.[5][6]

    Timeline data (JSON)

This tracker logs automaker and platform announcements on in-car gaming, and the safety actions around them. It is updated as new launches and regulatory steps happen. For how the platforms work, see In-car gaming explained.

    Where things stand (October 2026)

Volkswagen of America announced AirConsole for six model year 2027 vehicles on 23 September 2026, calling itself the first volume automotive brand in the US to offer it.[3][7] The games are playable while parked, with phones as controllers and 20 titles at launch.[5] AirConsole‘s maker lists BMW, Volkswagen, Audi, Porsche, Skoda and Tata as partners.[2] Tesla Arcade has offered games on Tesla screens since 2019, limited to Park.[1]

The safety line: parked, or passenger-only

Most platforms allow play only while parked, including AirConsole on Volkswagen and BMW and games under Google’s Android for Cars rules.[5][8][6] Tesla’s in-motion Passenger Play was withdrawn at NHTSA’s request.[4] In closing the case, NHTSA said technological lockouts are needed because many drivers disregard on-screen notices.[9] Audi’s 2025 approach is to allow front-passenger play while moving only behind a privacy screen that blocks the driver’s view.[10]

    Business models

Volkswagen bundles AirConsole into its In-Vehicle Premium subscription: three months free (one year on the ID. Buzz), then $149 a year on model year 2027 cars.[11] Tesla’s Steam beta required 16 GB of memory and Premium Connectivity.[12] NVIDIA announced its GeForce NOW cloud gaming service for partner brands’ cars in 2023.[13]
