Tesla Optimus
Also known as Optimus, Tesla Bot, Optimus V3
Optimus is the humanoid robot Tesla has been developing since it showed a walking prototype in 2022.[1] Tesla is converting its Fremont Model S and X lines into an Optimus line designed for 1 million robots a year.[2] As of its July 2026 update, production was "anticipated later this year".[3] Earlier targets for volume and for the Optimus V3 reveal have slipped.[4]
Key facts
Optimus is the carmaker Tesla’s humanoid robot programme. Tesla’s stated factory capacity of 1 million robots a year compares with about 15,000 humanoids shipped worldwide in 2025.[2][5]
History
Tesla showed its first walking Optimus prototype at its 2022 AI Day. Chief executive Elon Musk guessed it would eventually cost “much less than $20,000” and suggested consumer orders were three to five years away.[1] IEEE Spectrum noted at the time that the demonstrations were curated and that the hard part would be software.[6]
Factory plans
In its Q1 2026 update, Tesla said a first-generation Optimus line designed for 1 million robots a year would replace the Model S and Model X lines at Fremont. It also said it was preparing Gigafactory Texas for a second-generation line designed for 10 million robots a year in the long term.[2] By its Q2 update in July 2026, the S and X lines had been decommissioned and Optimus lines were being installed, with production “anticipated later this year”.[3][7] Tesla said the first robots would go to its “Optimus Academy” for training-data collection.[3] The same update’s capacity table listed Optimus in both California and Texas as “Construction”, with a reminder that installed capacity is not the same as current production.[8]
Delays
Timelines have repeatedly slipped. Electrek reported in April 2026 that Musk had moved the Optimus V3 reveal from the first quarter of 2026 to “probably middle of this year”, and that his January 2025 forecast of roughly 10,000 robots built in 2025 was missed.[4] AP reported that Tesla shipped a few hundred humanoids or fewer in 2025.[5]
What to watch
The questions to watch are whether Fremont starts producing robots in 2026, whether Tesla shows Optimus V3, and whether robots move from data collection to useful factory work.[3][4]
How it compares
Rivals are further along on visible output. Figure says its BotQ factory had delivered more than 350 Figure 03 humanoids by April 2026 and was making one an hour, and its robots work in logistics at BMW’s Spartanburg plant.[9][10] China’s Unitree lists its G1 humanoid from $13,500, below the “much less than $20,000” Musk suggested for Optimus in 2022.[11][1] Software is the other race. Google DeepMind’s Gemini Robotics 2 and Figure’s Helix 02 control whole humanoid bodies, and NVIDIA offers open GR00T models to other makers.[12][13][14] Tesla’s filings describe its first Optimus builds as going to its Optimus Academy for training-data collection.[3]
The sceptical case
Outside experts question near-term humanoid timelines. UC Berkeley roboticist Ken Goldberg argues robots face a “100,000-year data gap” compared with the text used to train language models.[15] A former Agility Robotics executive told IEEE Spectrum that demand, not manufacturing, is the main obstacle, since no one has yet found an application needing thousands of humanoids per facility.[16] IEEE Spectrum also reported that industrial customers expect about 99.99% reliability and that safety standards for dynamically balancing legged robots were still being written in 2025.[17] These arguments are weighed in the humanoid robots readiness debate.
Questions readers ask
Is Tesla Optimus in production?
Not at volume as of July 2026. Tesla said it was installing first-generation Optimus lines at Fremont, with production anticipated later in 2026.[3]
How many Optimus robots will Tesla make?
Tesla says the Fremont line is designed for 1 million robots a year and a planned Texas line for 10 million a year in the long term. These are design capacities, not output.[2]
Has Optimus been delayed?
Yes. Electrek reported that the V3 reveal slipped from early 2026 to mid-2026, and that a forecast of about 10,000 robots built in 2025 was missed.[4]
