Should games use AI-generated voices? The AI voice NPC debate
Tools such as NVIDIA ACE let developers build game characters that hear players and answer with generated speech,[1] and in 2025 Fortnite put an AI-voiced Darth Vader in front of its players.[2] Voice actors pushed back: SAG-AFTRA filed a labour charge over the Vader voice and won consent and disclosure rules for AI digital replicas in a 2025 contract that ended a strike of more than 300 days.[3][4][5]
The question
Game characters can now listen to players and answer in generated speech.[1] The question is whether, and on what terms, games should use AI-generated voices instead of, or alongside, human performers. For background on voice-controlled and voice-chat games, see Voice gaming explained.
What we know
The technology. nvidia‘s ACE provides cloud and on-device AI models for speech, intelligence and animation. It is designed for building conversational in-game characters.[1] PUBG uses it for AI teammates that communicate in natural language, and Dead Meat lets players question a suspect in their own words.[6] At CES 2025 NVIDIA extended ACE from conversational characters to autonomous ones, with models that let characters hear audio cues.[7]
The flashpoint. In May 2025 Disney and Epic Games let Fortnite players recruit and chat with an AI-voiced Darth Vader. They used James Earl Jones’s voice in what the companies called close consultation with the late actor’s estate.[2] On 19 May 2025 SAG-AFTRA filed an unfair labor practice charge with the National Labor Relations Board against Llama Productions, an Epic Games company. The union argued the AI voice displaced work its members could have done.[3]
The settlement. SAG-AFTRA suspended its video game strike, which had lasted more than 300 days and centred on AI protections, on 11 June 2025.[5] Members ratified the 2025 Interactive Media Agreement with 95.04% approval. It requires consent and disclosure for AI digital replicas and lets performers suspend new AI generation during a strike.[4] The video game companies said the deal’s AI provisions require transparency, consent and compensation for digital replicas.[8]
How to read it
The 2025 contract did not ban AI voices. It set the terms for using them: consent, disclosure and pay.[4] That moves the dispute away from whether AI voices may be used at all and toward whose voice is used and on what terms. The Vader case shows the difference. Its voice was made with the estate’s involvement,[2] yet the union still objected that it displaced bargaining-unit work.[3] Fully generated characters built with toolkits like ACE raise a separate question that the replica rules do not obviously answer: who, if anyone, is owed for a voice that imitates no particular person.
What to watch
Three things are worth watching, though this page makes no prediction about how they will turn out. First, how the 2025 agreement’s consent and disclosure rules work in practice as studios ship AI-voiced characters. Second, whether more games adopt conversational AI teammates like PUBG’s.[6] Third, how the next contract negotiation treats fully synthetic voices.

AI voices open up new kinds of play
Conversational characters let players speak in their own words and get unscripted answers, and AI teammates can respond to spoken plans. NVIDIA presents its tools as a way to build characters that perceive, plan and act like human players.[6][7][2]
Questions readers ask
What is an AI voice NPC?
A non-player character that can understand what a player says and reply with generated speech. NVIDIA's ACE offers models for speech, intelligence and animation for this purpose.[1]
What happened with Darth Vader in Fortnite?
In May 2025 Disney and Epic let Fortnite players recruit and chat with an AI-voiced Darth Vader based on James Earl Jones's voice, made in what the companies called close consultation with his estate. SAG-AFTRA then filed an unfair labor practice charge.[2][3]
Did voice actors win AI protections?
Yes. The 2025 SAG-AFTRA Interactive Media Agreement, ratified with 95.04% approval, requires consent and disclosure for AI digital replicas and lets performers suspend new AI generation during a strike.[4]
