    AMD

Also known as Advanced Micro Devices, Advanced Micro Devices Inc., AMD Inc.

AMD (Advanced Micro Devices) is a US chip designer based in Santa Clara, California, that makes EPYC server processors and Instinct AI accelerators.[1][2] Its Data Center segment supplied 58% of revenue in the second quarter of 2026, and it has signed multi-gigawatt GPU agreements with OpenAI and Anthropic.[2][3][4]

    Key facts

AMD (Advanced Micro Devices) designs processors and accelerators for data centers, PCs, gaming and embedded systems.[5] As of mid-2026 its data center business is its largest. Data Center revenue was $6.7 billion in the second quarter of 2026, or 58% of the total, and more than doubled from a year earlier.[2] AMD has also signed multi-gigawatt AI accelerator agreements with OpenAI and Anthropic.[3][4]

    History

AMD was incorporated in Delaware on May 1, 1969.[6] Its principal executive offices are in Santa Clara, California.[1] Lisa Su is the company’s chair and chief executive officer.[7]

On February 14, 2022, AMD completed an all-stock acquisition of Xilinx.[8] In March 2025 it acquired ZT Systems. In October 2025 it sold ZT’s data center infrastructure manufacturing business to Sanmina.[9] On September 26, 2026 AMD agreed to acquire World Labs Technologies for about $8.2 billion, to be paid in AMD shares.[10]

    Products and manufacturing

AMD reports three segments: Data Center, Client and Gaming, and Embedded.[5] Its data center products include EPYC server processors and Instinct GPUs, which drove the segment’s growth in 2026.[2] AMD has unveiled Helios, a rack-scale system, and the Instinct MI400 Series GPU family, which includes the MI455X.[11]

Like NVIDIA, AMD does not run its own fabs. It relies on third-party foundries, including TSMC and GlobalFoundries, to make its wafers.[12] At the end of 2025 the company had about 31,000 employees.[13]

AMD uses hybrid-bonding, which joins stacked chips with direct copper-to-copper connections; the technique is used in its processors and AI accelerators.[14][15]

US export rules also affect AMD. In April 2025 it disclosed that a new license requirement applied to exports of its MI308 accelerators to China and could lead to charges of up to about $800 million.[16] The US AI chip export controls page follows those rules.

    Business and finances

AMD reported record revenue of $34.6 billion for 2025. Data Center revenue was $16.6 billion of that total.[17] In the second quarter of 2026 revenue was $11.5 billion, up 50% year over year, with a GAAP gross margin of 54%.[18] Client and Gaming revenue was $3.8 billion.[19] Within that segment, Client revenue was $3.1 billion, up 23%, which AMD attributed mainly to demand for Ryzen processors.[19] Gaming revenue was $779 million. Embedded revenue was $977 million, up 19%.[19]

AMD expected third-quarter 2026 revenue of about $13 billion, plus or minus $300 million. At the midpoint, that would be about 41% growth from a year earlier.[20] AMD shares fell more than 8% in after-hours trading after the second-quarter report, Quartz reported.[21]

    AI partnerships

In October 2025 AMD and OpenAI agreed to deploy 6 gigawatts of AMD Instinct GPUs across multiple product generations. The first 1 gigawatt of MI450 GPUs is scheduled for the second half of 2026.[3] As part of the deal, AMD issued OpenAI a warrant for up to 160 million AMD shares. The warrant vests as deployment milestones and AMD share-price targets are met.[3]

In July 2026 Anthropic agreed to deploy up to 2 gigawatts of MI450 Series GPUs in Helios rack-scale systems. The first gigawatt is scheduled to begin in the first half of 2027.[4] AMD also committed to make a strategic equity investment of up to $5 billion in Anthropic.[22] The companies plan to use Anthropic’s Claude models to optimize workloads for Instinct GPUs and to speed up development of ROCm, AMD’s GPU software stack. AMD also plans to adopt Claude across its engineering and product teams.[23] The deployment builds on Anthropic’s existing use of AMD’s MI355X GPUs.[23]

    Peers

For scale, NVIDIA reported Data Center revenue of $89.0 billion in the quarter ended July 26, 2026.[24] Intel reported $6.3 billion in Data Center and AI revenue and $8.9 billion in client computing revenue in the second quarter of 2026.[25]
