Voice gaming explained: voice control, voice chat and AI voices
Voice gaming covers games you control by speaking, such as Mage Arena, where players cast spells by saying the right words, and games built around voice chat, such as R.E.P.O.'s proximity chat.[1][2] It also covers voice features on consoles, such as the PS5's Voice Command preview and chat transcription, and AI characters that talk back, which have raised labour disputes over performers' voices.[3][4][5]
“Voice gaming” covers several different things: games you control by speaking, games built around players talking to each other, console voice and accessibility features, and AI characters that listen and talk back.[1][2][3][6] This explainer covers each, then links to an analysis of the debate over AI-generated voices.
Games you control with your voice
Some games make your microphone a controller. In Mage Arena (2025), teams of sorcerers and warlocks fight by speaking spells: say the right words and you cast a fireball or a frostbolt.[1] In Phasmophobia (2020), a four-player ghost-hunting game, the ghosts are “listening”. You use your real voice to ask questions through an Ouija board or a spirit box.[7]
These games depend on speech recognition. Phasmophobia advertises full voice recognition for its Ouija board and spirit box sessions.[7] Mage Arena turns the correct spoken incantation into the input that casts a spell, in up to 4v4 team battles.[1]
Games built around voice chat
Proximity voice chat lets players hear each other only when their characters are close, so talking becomes part of the game world. R.E.P.O., a co-op horror game for up to six players released in February 2025, lists proximity voice chat as a core feature alongside physics and monsters.[2]
Voice and accessibility on consoles
On a PS5 in the US or UK you can say “Hey PlayStation” to open games, apps and settings, capture gameplay or control video playback. The feature is still a preview and works only in English.[3][8] As an accessibility feature, the PS5’s chat transcription turns other players’ voices into text and reads typed messages aloud.[4]
PS5 Voice Command (Preview) is limited to accounts registered in the US and UK and listens and responds only in English. Sony says it may change or end the preview.[3] Chat transcription combines speech-to-text and text-to-speech. It works in party chat and in game chat only for games that support it.[4] The console’s screen reader reads on-screen text aloud and gives spoken guidance, in certain languages.[9]
AI characters that talk back
nvidia‘s ACE is a suite of AI models for speech, intelligence and animation. Developers use it to build conversational game characters that run in the cloud or on the player’s device.[6] PUBG uses it for AI “Co-Player Characters” that communicate in natural language. In the murder-mystery game Dead Meat, players can question a suspect in their own words.[10] NVIDIA first introduced ACE in 2023 and at CES 2025 extended it to autonomous characters that can hear audio cues.[11]
AI voices have also reached well-known characters. In May 2025 Fortnite let players chat with an AI-voiced Darth Vader based on James Earl Jones’s voice.[12] The actors’ union SAG-AFTRA filed an unfair labour practice charge over it.[5] The arguments on both sides are covered in Should games use AI-generated voices?.
