720Hz gaming monitors: a sourced buyer's guide (October 2026)
As of October 2026 a buyer can choose between 27-inch 1440p OLEDs that offer 720Hz only at 720p, such as the LG 27GX790B and ASUS PG27AQWP-W,[1] and the ASUS PG259QWS Ace, a 24.5-inch monitor that runs 720Hz at native 1080p and was reported at $1,099.[2][3] RTINGS measured sharp motion and low input lag on the 27-inch models, along with VRR flicker.[4][5] ContentLora did not test any of these monitors.
How this guide works. ContentLora does no hands-on testing. This roundup compares manufacturer specifications, reported prices and the published measurements of independent reviewers, mainly RTINGS, which buys and lab-tests monitors. Every finding below is attributed. Prices are dated and change often.
The options as of October 2026
ASUS ROG Swift OLED PG259QWS Ace. A 24.5-inch, 1920x1080 glossy Tandem WOLED monitor at 720Hz, with a quoted 0.02 ms response time, 1,700 nits peak brightness and a 3-year burn-in warranty.[2] It is the first product using LG Display’s 24.5-inch 720Hz panel, which runs 720Hz at native resolution.[6][7] Hardware Busters reported it due early in Q4 2026 at $1,099 (EUR 1,149).[3] We found no full independent review of it as of 10 October 2026.
LG UltraGear 27GX790B. A 27-inch 1440p RGB Tandem OLED at 540Hz natively, with a dual mode for 720Hz at 720p.[1] It has a matte coating.[8] 9to5Toys reported a $1,000 launch price in December 2025 and a $799.99 price in February 2026.[9] RTINGS found very sharp motion and low input lag in certain gaming picture modes, but distracting VRR flicker when frame rates change quickly.[4]
ASUS ROG Swift OLED PG27AQWP-W. Built on the same 27-inch panel, with a glossy coating.[8] RTINGS describes its 720p 720Hz “Frame Rate Boost” mode and found low input lag at any refresh rate, noticeable VRR flicker, and burn-in safeguards including a custom heatsink and a proximity sensor.[10][5] It was reported selling for around $1,100 in December 2025.[11]
Other 27-inch dual-mode models. ViewSonic’s XG273F-2K-OLED, Acer’s X27U F8, AOC’s Agon AGP277QKDC and ASRock’s Taichi TCO27USA are listed with the same 540Hz/720Hz pattern.[12][13] We found no published prices or independent measurements for them.
What to check before buying
- Native or dual mode. Dual-mode monitors usually double the refresh rate by halving the resolution.[14]
- Your frame rate. Filling 720Hz needs about 720 frames per second. That is achievable in CS2 or Valorant with a top-end CPU and low settings, but not in Unreal Engine 5 games.[15]
- VRR flicker. RTINGS found it on both 27-inch models it measured.[4][5]
- Spec-sheet response times. OLED figures such as 0.02 ms are best-case vendor numbers.[16]
- Coating. The ASUS models are glossy and the LG is matte, so check which finish suits your room.[8]
Does 720Hz pay off?
The best controlled evidence stops at 360Hz. A 2026 study of 101 gamers found no significant performance difference between 144Hz and 360Hz,[17] and no study cited here tested 720Hz.[18] The frame interval does keep shrinking, from 2.78 ms at 360Hz to 1.39 ms at 720Hz.[19]
For a competitive player who already runs light esports games at very high frame rates, the native 720Hz model is the only option that avoids a resolution trade-off. For a player who also wants sharper detail in other games, a 27-inch 1440p model is more flexible, and its 540Hz native mode is already beyond the range where studies have found measurable gains. For most other buyers, the research suggests the money may do more elsewhere, for example on a GPU or CPU that can sustain high frame rates. These are judgements from the cited facts, not test results.
