    Timeline data (JSON)

If you are thinking about suicide or are in crisis, call or text 988 or chat at 988lifeline.org (US).[7] In the UK and Ireland, call Samaritans free on 116 123.[8] Elsewhere, find a local helpline at findahelpline.com.[9]

This tracker follows the US 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline and national crisis care: how the line is used and funded, policy changes, and new data on suicide and prevention.[7][10] It is updated as new reports appear and is current to 11 October 2026. It follows safe-messaging guidance and is not medical advice.

    Where things stand, October 2026

The Press 3 option for LGBTQ+ youth resumed on 30 September 2026, 14 months after it ended, following a funding directive in the fiscal 2026 appropriations law.[4][5] SAMHSA had told GAO the service ended because its federal funding was exhausted.[11] GAO’s July 2026 review found growing volume and rising call answer rates, and SAMHSA aimed for local centers to answer more than 90% of texts and chats by September 2026.[12][13][14]

    Latest data

CDC’s NCHS reported in September 2026 that 48,824 people died by suicide in the US in 2024, a rate of 13.7 per 100,000, down from 14.1 in 2023; the rate has not changed significantly since 2017.[6][15] Rates fell for women aged 25 and older and for males aged 15–24 and 25–44.[16] Globally, WHO estimates 727,000 suicide deaths in 2021 and says timely, evidence-based interventions can prevent suicide.[17][18]

    Next dates to watch

SAMHSA plans to begin routing texts by approximate location by April 2027.[19] We will add SAMHSA performance updates, state 988 fee laws and fiscal 2027 appropriations as they happen. Background is in the 988 Lifeline page, suicide prevention explained and the crisis-line funding debate.
