    Also known as Anthropic PBC

Anthropic is a US artificial intelligence company, founded in 2021 by former OpenAI executives, that develops the Claude family of AI models.[1] It is a public benefit corporation.[2] In May 2026 it raised $65 billion at a $965 billion valuation, and in June 2026 it confidentially filed for an IPO.[3][4]

    Key facts

Anthropic is an artificial intelligence company that develops the Claude family of AI models.[5] It was founded in 2021 by siblings Dario Amodei and Daniela Amodei, both former vice presidents at OpenAI.[1] As of October 2026 it remains privately held; its last priced round, in May 2026, valued it at $965 billion.[3][4]

    History and leadership

Anthropic is led by Dario Amodei as chief executive and Daniela Amodei as president.[6] In May 2021 it described itself as an AI safety and research company when it announced $124 million in funding led by Skype co-founder Jaan Tallinn.[7] The company is headquartered in San Francisco.[8]

    Structure and governance

Anthropic is a public benefit corporation. Its stated purpose is “the responsible development and maintenance of advanced AI for the long-term benefit of humanity.”[2] It also has a Long-Term Benefit Trust, whose trustees help elect the board of directors.[9] The company says it aims to build “reliable, interpretable, and steerable AI systems.”[10]

    Funding, revenue and IPO filing

On February 12, 2026 Anthropic announced a $30 billion Series G round at a $380 billion post-money valuation, led by GIC and Coatue.[11] At the time it said its run-rate revenue was $14 billion.[12]

On May 28, 2026 it announced a $65 billion Series H round at a $965 billion post-money valuation, led by Altimeter Capital, Dragoneer, Greenoaks and Sequoia Capital.[3] It said its run-rate revenue had crossed $47 billion that month.[13] Anthropic counts sales made through cloud partners in this figure, which OpenAI does not, so the two companies’ numbers are not directly comparable.[14]

To run its models, Anthropic has signed compute agreements with Amazon for up to five gigawatts of new capacity, with Google and Broadcom for five gigawatts of TPU (tensor processing unit) capacity, and with SpaceX for GPU capacity.[15]

On June 1, 2026 Anthropic confidentially submitted a draft Form S-1 registration statement to the US Securities and Exchange Commission for a proposed initial public offering. It said the number of shares and the price had not been set.[4]

    Claude models

Anthropic released several models in September and October 2026. On September 1 it released Claude Fable 5.1, along with Claude Mythos 5.1 for participants in its Project Glasswing program.[16] Claude Opus 5.5 followed on September 22, aimed at long-running agentic coding and knowledge work, with a context window of 1 million tokens.[5] Claude Sonnet 5.5 arrived on September 28, and Claude Haiku 5.5, tuned for high-volume and latency-sensitive work, on October 7.[17]

Developers can use these models through Anthropic’s own API and through Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud and Microsoft Foundry.[18]

In April 2026 Anthropic announced Project Glasswing, which gives defenders of critical software access to Claude Mythos Preview, a model it described as general-purpose and unreleased.[19] Shortly after it released Claude Fable 5 in June 2026, Anthropic said a US government export control directive required it to suspend all access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 by foreign nationals, and that it had to disable both models for all customers to comply.[20] The US AI chip export controls page covers the wider rules.

Anthropic also introduced the Model Context Protocol (MCP) in November 2024, an open standard for connecting AI assistants to the systems where data lives.[21] Its Responsible Scaling Policy, one of the frontier-safety-frameworks published by AI developers, was first introduced in September 2023 and reached version 3.4 in July 2026.[22] In January 2026 it published a new constitution for Claude that explains the reasoning behind desired behaviours rather than listing rules.[23]

For chips, Anthropic agreed in July 2026 to deploy up to 2 gigawatts of AMD Instinct MI450 Series GPUs, and AMD committed to invest up to $5 billion in the company.[24][25]

    Dispute with the Pentagon

In 2026 the US Defense Department designated Anthropic a supply chain risk, and Anthropic challenged the designation in court.[26][27] In August 2026, US District Judge Rita Lin in California ruled that the designation was unlawful retaliation under the First Amendment.[26] On September 25, 2026 the US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit ruled 2-1, in a separate case about a different rule, that the Pentagon could keep the label. That ruling lets the Pentagon continue removing Claude models from its systems.[27]
