Genesis Mission (US AI-for-science initiative)
Also known as The Genesis Mission, Executive Order Launching the Genesis Mission, DOE Genesis Mission
The Genesis Mission is a US national initiative, launched by executive order on 24 November 2025, that tasks the Department of Energy with building a closed-loop AI platform for science from its supercomputers and datasets.[1][2] By October 2026 its first-year portfolio had reached 297 projects.[3]
Key facts
The Genesis Mission is a US government programme to speed up science with AI. It was launched by an executive order signed on 24 November 2025, which the White House described as a national initiative to accelerate scientific breakthroughs using AI.[1]
What it is meant to do
The order tasks the Department of Energy (DOE) with integrating its supercomputers and datasets into a unified, closed-loop AI platform. That platform is meant to automate experiment design, accelerate simulations and generate predictive models for federal research.[2] In practice, that puts national laboratories at the centre of the push toward self-driving-labs and AI-assisted simulation.[2]
The order is specific about the platform’s parts. It lists national laboratory supercomputers and AI agents that explore design spaces, evaluate experimental outcomes and automate workflows.[4] It also set deadlines. DOE had 60 days to propose at least 20 national science and technology challenges, and 240 days to review national laboratory capacity for robotic labs that can run AI-directed experiments and manufacturing.[5][6] Within 270 days it was to seek to demonstrate an initial operating capability for at least one challenge, subject to available appropriations.[7] Counted from the 24 November 2025 signing, that 270-day window ran to late August 2026.[1][7]
Awards so far
DOE first announced Genesis Mission project awards in July 2026.[8] On 8 October 2026 it announced 12 Phase II awards totaling $159 million, plus six Phase I projects, which brought the first-year cohort to 297 projects.[3] DOE frames the Phase II awards around “Super Intelligence for science”.[3] The October selections brought the number of Phase II projects to 14.[9]
The named projects span the sciences. Commonwealth Fusion Systems leads a digital twin to simulate and optimise a fusion demonstration device. The University of Washington leads work on tools to predict and design functional enzymes, and UC San Diego plans to expand the RNA structure database five-fold to train models. Fermilab leads a project to design rugged microchips for extreme environments such as space.[10] Private AI-science companies take part too: Lila Sciences said three of its proposals won Phase I awards, each with a national laboratory or university partner.[11]
How it fits the field
Most headline AI-for-science results so far have come from companies and universities: AlphaFold and GNoME from Google DeepMind, RFdiffusion from the University of Washington.[12][13][14] Private capital is moving in the same direction: Periodic Labs and Lila Sciences have raised hundreds of millions of dollars for autonomous discovery.[15][16]
Open questions
The first project awards were announced only in July 2026, so scientific results are still pending.[8] Public documents reviewed for this page do not say whether the 270-day operating-capability goal was met.[7] Funding continuity also matters in this field. In 2025 the long-running CASP protein prediction assessment needed temporary money from Google DeepMind when its NIH grant ran out.[17]
Other federal AI-for-science activity
The Genesis Mission is not the only US government use of AI in science. NOAA put AI-driven global weather models, including a hybrid AI-physics ensemble, into operation on 17 December 2025, after a multi-year collaboration with academia and industry called Project EAGLE.[18][19] The National Institute of General Medical Sciences sponsors the CASP17 protein prediction assessment.[20] These efforts sit in different agencies; how far the Genesis platform will link them is not yet clear from public documents.[2]
