Key facts
Overview
Magic: The Gathering is a strategic trading card game made by Wizards of the Coast, a subsidiary of Hasbro. Hasbro describes it as one of the original collectible card games, with characters in multiple universes that keep expanding through new card sets.[1] Hasbro says Magic’s audience now spans competitive players, casual and social players, collectors, digital players and fans of other franchises.[4]
Universes Beyond and record sales
A large part of Magic’s recent growth comes from Universes Beyond sets, which bring well-known third-party brands into the game.[1] Its 2025 Final Fantasy set was the highest-selling Magic set of all time by net revenue.[5] Magic revenue grew 59% in 2025, its strongest year, helped by the fourth-quarter Avatar: The Last Airbender set, back-catalogue sales and the Secret Lair line.[2]
The growth continued into 2026. In the second quarter Magic earned $545.3 million, up 32% from $412.0 million a year earlier, its first quarter above $500 million.[6][3] Hasbro attributed the gain to the Secrets of Strixhaven set and the Universes Beyond Marvel Super Heroes set, and raised its full-year guidance.[7][8]
On the TCGplayer marketplace, Magic was the top trading card game by dollar value of sales in the first quarter of 2026.[9]
Tournament rules and proxies
Magic’s Tournament Rules, effective 27 February 2026, allow only regulation-sized, genuine Magic cards released by Wizards in sanctioned events.[10] Players may not make their own proxies; only the Head Judge can issue one, for example for a card accidentally damaged during the event.[11] Wizards has said that unauthorised reproductions of its cards are a type of counterfeit.[12]
Fan content
Wizards’ Fan Content Policy lets fans use Magic’s IP in free content such as videos and fan art, provided it is labelled unofficial.[13][14] The policy excludes counterfeit or proxy Magic cards and bars using Wizards’ IP in other games.[15][16] See custom and proxy trading cards for how these rules compare with Pokémon’s, and the pokemon-trading-card-game for Magic’s main rival.
