    Timeline data (JSON)

This tracker follows unemployment benefit claims, labour-market data and benefit rule changes in the US and UK. It covers data through 11 October 2026. It is information, not financial or legal advice. Benefit rules vary by state and country, so check the official agency if you are claiming.[6]

    Latest US data

The Labor Department’s most recent weekly report came out on 8 October 2026.[7] Seasonally adjusted initial claims were 197,000 in the week ending 3 October, down 2,000 from a revised 199,000.[1] The four-week moving average was 198,000.[8] A year earlier, seasonally adjusted claims were 233,000.[9]

Insured unemployment, the number continuing to claim state benefits, was 1,716,000 in the week ending 26 September, an insured unemployment rate of 1.1%.[2] Counting all programs, 1,520,055 continued weeks were claimed in the week ending 19 September, against 1,727,793 a year earlier.[10] The highest insured unemployment rates were in New Jersey (2.0%) and Washington (1.8%).[11] No state was on the Extended Benefits program.[12] Former federal civilian employees filed 395 initial claims in the week ending 26 September.[13]

The September jobs report, published on 2 October, showed payrolls up 29,000 and the unemployment rate at 4.2%.[3] About 7.1 million people were unemployed, 1.9 million of them for 27 weeks or more.[14] The next report, for October, is scheduled for 6 November 2026.[15] For how these figures feed into interest-rate decisions, see the Fed rate decisions tracker.

    Latest UK data

The ONS estimated UK unemployment at 4.9% in May to July 2026, up 0.2 percentage points on the year.[4] The Claimant Count, which covers Jobseeker’s Allowance and Universal Credit claimants required to look for work, rose to 1.692 million in August.[16] Vacancies fell to an estimated 702,000 in June to August, and payrolled employees were 101,000 lower than a year earlier.[17]

DWP’s latest quarterly statistics, published on 18 August, counted 8.4 million people on Universal Credit in May 2026, a record.[5] Managed migration from older benefits accounted for 73.2% of the rise over the year.[18]

    Rule changes to know

    • UK: the two-child limit ended on 6 April 2026, and the child element is now paid for each child.[19][20] The Universal Credit Act 2025 raised the standard allowance above inflation and set a lower health element for most new claimants.[21][22]
    • US: states must generally start Medicaid work requirements by 1 January 2027.[23] State unemployment laws in effect from July 2026 set maximum weekly benefits from $235 in Mississippi to $1,208 in Washington among the states we sampled.[24]

    Next dates
