Analysis
What's driving crypto in 2026? Flows, leverage, rates and policy
Bitcoin fell from about $126,000 in October 2025 to below $64,000 in February 2026, then recovered to about $82,000 by early October.[1][2][3] Analysts point to ETF flows, leveraged derivatives, Fed policy and stalled legislation. Each explains part of the moves, and none explains all of them.[4][5][6][7]
This analysis sets out the evidence on what has moved crypto prices in 2026 and the competing explanations. Facts are sourced. Interpretations and forecasts are labelled, and forecasts come from named third parties, not from us. Nothing here is financial advice.
What happened
Bitcoin set a record of about $126,000 on October 6, 2025.[1] On October 10, a US tariff announcement set off about $19 billion of liquidations, and bitcoin fell from about $122,000 to $105,000.[5] It fell below $64,000 on February 5, 2026.[2] It dropped again to about $65,700 on June 3, after Strategy disclosed its first publicised bitcoin sale and spot ETF outflows passed $3.2 billion.[8] From August it recovered. Fortune quoted it at $82,413 on October 9, 2026.[9][3] Ether has lagged: ETHA’s 2026 total return was -17.33% as of October 8, against -6.71% for the bitcoin fund IBIT.[10][11]
Flows
Spot bitcoin ETFs were about $5.8 billion in net outflows for 2026 by mid-July. A $2.4 billion week ending September 25 turned the year positive.[4] Ether ETFs drew about $1.75 billion to $1.85 billion in August and about $832 million in September. They then lost about $118 million from September 29 to October 1.[12][13][14] Binance Research estimated total crypto market value rose 11% in September to $2.99 trillion.[15]
Flows and prices moved together through 2026. That fits the view that ETF demand now sets the medium-term trend. The direction of cause is hard to establish, though: rising prices can also attract inflows. The October divergence, with money still going into bitcoin funds while leaving ether funds, suggests investors are choosing between assets rather than leaving crypto as a whole. One week of data cannot settle that.
Leverage and positioning
Perpetual futures remain a major part of crypto trading, and heavy leverage amplified the October 2025 selloff.[16] In August 2026 the reverse happened. A short squeeze liquidated nearly $3 billion, mostly bearish bets, in a day and lifted bitcoin above $71,000.[9] CoinDesk counted 10 days in 2026 with bitcoin moves of at least three standard deviations, more than in all of 2018.[17] One market veteran told CoinDesk that the four-year halving cycle “has changed.”[18]
Leverage explains the speed and size of the biggest single-day moves better than it explains the trend. Liquidation cascades can only start when traders crowd onto one side of the market. Each cascade is easier to explain afterwards than to predict.
Rates and policy
The Federal Reserve raised its target range to 3.75%-4% on September 16, 2026, citing elevated inflation.[6] Bitcoin was near $76,000 that morning and near $86,600 on October 2.[19][20] Binance Research found bitcoin’s correlation with US real yields at -0.31 in August.[21] In Washington, the Senate failed to advance the CLARITY Act market-structure bill on September 15, 2026.[7] The SEC’s Regulation Crypto Assets proposal is open for comment until October 20, 2026.[22] The clarity-act page and the CLARITY Act tracker cover the bill.
A rate hike would normally be expected to hurt speculative assets. Crypto’s gains after the September hike suggest flows and positioning mattered more in that period. The failed cloture vote on September 15 was followed by higher prices over the next two weeks, not a sustained selloff. These are readings of a short period and may not hold.
What comes next
Third-party forecasts differ widely. In February 2026, Stifel’s Barry Bannister saw a possible bottom near $38,000. Bitwise’s Matt Hougan said crypto winters typically last about 13 months.[23][24] In early June, Kalshi traders put the odds of bitcoin falling below $60,000 in 2026 at nearly 80%. It was above $82,000 in early October.[25] In October, a Zeus Research analyst described a “potentially more bullish setup” for the fourth quarter.[26] We make no price forecast. Things to watch: whether ETF inflows continue, more Fed moves, and whether the Senate revisits the CLARITY Act.
Competing views
Institutional flows set the trend
ETF demand is the main swing factor: 2026 bitcoin ETF flows were deeply negative in mid-July and turned positive in late September, as prices recovered.[4][27][12][26]
Questions readers ask
Why did bitcoin fall in early 2026?
Reports cited excess leverage, profit-taking by early holders, tech-sector credit stress, "hawkish" Fed rate cuts, and the Treasury Secretary saying he had no authority to buy bitcoin. Bitcoin fell below $64,000 on February 5, 2026.[28][2]
Why did crypto rebound in late 2026?
Prices rose alongside renewed ETF inflows. Bitcoin funds took in about $2.4 billion in the week ending September 25, and ether funds had their strongest month in about a year in August.[4][12]
Did the Fed's September 2026 rate hike hurt crypto?
Not visibly in the following weeks. The Fed raised rates on September 16, 2026, when bitcoin was near $76,000, and bitcoin traded near $86,600 on October 2.[6][19][20]
What happened to the CLARITY Act?
The Senate fell short of the 60 votes needed to advance it on September 15, 2026, voting 49 to 50.[7]
