Premier League title race 2026-27: Arsenal, Man City and the rest

As of 10 October 2026, Manchester City and champions Arsenal were level on 15 points, with City holding a game in hand and Brighton two points behind Arsenal.[1] Opta's pre-season model made Arsenal favourites at 38.0% and City second at 20.5%.[2] The biggest unknown is off the pitch: City have been found guilty of breaching financial rules, are appealing, and have not yet been sanctioned.[3][4]

After six weeks of the 2026-27 season, Manchester City and champions Arsenal were level on points at the top of the Premier League.[1] This page sets out the facts, how they can be read, and what forecasters have said. Forecasts here are attributed to their sources; ContentLora makes no predictions of its own and gives no betting advice.

    Where the race stands

As of 10 October 2026, City had 15 points from five games, Arsenal 15 from six and Brighton 13 from six.[1] City won each of their first five league games, including 1-0 at Manchester United.[5][6] Arsenal’s only defeat was 3-0 at Brighton on 19 September, and they beat Leeds 2-1 on 10 October.[7][8] Liverpool were seventh on nine points from five games, with three draws, and host City on 11 October; that result was pending at the time of writing.[9][10][11]

Five or six games is a small sample. City’s game in hand and perfect record give them the stronger position on paper, while Arsenal’s defeat at Brighton is their only dropped points. Brighton’s start, including a 5-0 win at Coventry, puts them in the leading group for now.[12] The 11 October match at Anfield is the first meeting between title contenders this season. Until the result is confirmed, no conclusion about it should be drawn.

    Arsenal: defending a title

Arsenal won the 2025-26 title, their first in 22 years.[13]

Retaining a title is often described as harder than winning one. Arsenal start this one as the model favourite and with the core of a title-winning side. A slip such as the loss at Brighton matters more in a race that looks tight at the top.

Manchester City: a new manager and a verdict

City appointed Enzo Maresca to succeed Pep Guardiola in June 2026.[14] An independent commission found City guilty of all charges of breaching financial rules between 2009-10 and 2017-18, and of most charges of failing to co-operate.[3] City deny wrongdoing and have appealed. A sanctions hearing was expected to run alongside the appeal, and no sanction had been set as of early October.[15][4]

On the pitch, City have made the best start of any club. Off it, the timing and size of any sanction are unknown. A points deduction applied during this season would change the table directly. One applied later, or overturned on appeal, would not. Readers should treat City’s current points total as provisional only in that sense; the results themselves stand.

    What the forecasters say

    • Opta, pre-season (14 August 2026): Arsenal 38.0%, Manchester City 20.5%, Liverpool 9.2%.[2] Manchester United 6.2%, Aston Villa 4.8%, Chelsea 4.1% and Tottenham 2.9%.[16]
    • Opta, 8 October 2026: City look like Arsenal’s closest challengers, but any punishment could affect their title bid.[17]
    • Method: Opta’s model uses betting market odds and its own power rankings to estimate match probabilities, then simulates the rest of the season thousands of times.[18]

These are probabilities, not predictions of a single outcome. They do not account for the timing of any sanction against City unless and until one is imposed.[18][4]

    What to watch next

The return fixture between Manchester City and Liverpool is on 8 May 2027.[11] Matchweek 7 includes Nottingham Forest v Arsenal and Manchester City v Ipswich.[19] For the latest table and results, see Premier League 2026-27 tracker.

    The verdict could decide it

City have been found guilty of financial breaches and are appealing. Opta Analyst says any punishment could affect their title challenge; when and how it lands is unknown.[3][15][4]
