How the Premier League works: points, relegation, Europe and SCR

The Premier League is England's top division. Clubs earn three points for a win and one for a draw, and the bottom three are relegated to the English Football League each season.[1][2] From 2026-27, the old Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR) have been replaced by Squad Cost Ratio rules, which cap squad spending at 85% of revenue.[3][4]

The Premier League is the top division of English men’s football: 20 clubs compete over a season running from August to May.[5][6] This guide explains the rules for 2026-27, the first season under new spending limits. Choose the beginner or expert view.

    The season and the points

The 2026-27 season started on 21 August 2026 and ends on 30 May 2027.[6] A win is worth three points and a draw one point.[1] The team with the most points at the end is champion. Arsenal won the 2025-26 title.[7]

The 2026-27 calendar has 33 weekend and five midweek rounds.[8] On the final day all matches kick off at the same time.[6] Clubs level on points are separated by goal difference, then goals scored.[9] If the title, relegation or European qualification still cannot be decided, further tie-breaks end in a play-off on neutral ground.[10]

The league pauses for international breaks. In 2026-27 the September and October breaks were merged into a single 16-day window, from 21 September to 6 October.[11] The remaining breaks are in November and March.[12]

    Promotion and relegation

The bottom three clubs are relegated to the English Football League (EFL), and three clubs come up from the Championship.[2] For 2026-27 the promoted clubs are Coventry City, Ipswich Town and Hull City. Hull went up through the play-off final at Wembley.[13][14]

The rules aim to keep membership at 20 clubs, so fewer clubs are relegated if one leaves the league during a season.[5] Relegated clubs receive parachute payments: 55% of a club’s share of central funds in their first season down and 45% in the second.[15] Before the season, Opta’s model made promoted Hull favourites for relegation at 38.7%, ahead of fellow newcomers Ipswich at 31.2%.[16]

    European places

Finishing near the top earns a place in European competition the next season. BBC Sport’s 2026-27 table marks first to fourth for the UEFA Champions League, fifth for the Europa League and 18th to 20th for relegation.[17]

For 2026-27, nine English clubs qualified: Arsenal, Manchester City, Manchester United, Aston Villa and Liverpool for the Champions League; Bournemouth, Sunderland and Crystal Palace for the Europa League; and Brighton for the Conference League play-offs.[18]

Spending rules: from PSR to SCR

Clubs voted in November 2025 to replace the Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR) with Squad Cost Ratio (SCR) rules from 2026-27.[3] Under SCR, a club can spend up to 85% of its revenue on wages, transfer fees and agents’ fees.[4] Clubs that overspend by too much can lose points.[19]

SCR sets an 85% “green threshold” and a “red threshold” up to 30% higher. Clubs between the two are fined. Clubs above the red threshold face a six-point deduction plus one point for every £6.5m over it.[19] Assessments take place on 1 March, after the January transfer window, with monitoring in October.[20] The rule passed with 14 of 20 clubs in favour, the minimum required.[21] UEFA applies a stricter 70% limit to clubs in its competitions.[22] Clubs rejected “top-to-bottom anchoring”, which would have tied spending to a multiple of the bottom club’s central income. Only seven clubs supported it.[23]

Under the old PSR, sanctions followed a tariff. The Guardian describes Everton’s 10-point deduction for a £19.5m breach as six points for the breach plus one point per £5m overspent.[24]

    Other rules to know

Clubs agreed to stop carrying gambling sponsors on the front of match-day shirts from 2026-27.[25] In the UK, matches that kick off at 3pm on Saturday are not shown live on TV.[26] How to watch the Premier League in 2026-27 explains how to watch.
