Meningitis outbreaks and vaccine news tracker, 2025-2026

In 2026 England had an unusually fast MenB outbreak in Kent, with fifteen cases in 48 hours and two deaths, then launched a one-off MenB vaccine programme for new students.[1][2][3] US meningococcal cases reached 463 in 2025, driven by serogroup Y. US vaccine recommendations were cut back in January 2026, and a court restored the earlier schedule in March.[4][5][6]

    What we know

    • The March 2026 Kent MenB outbreak caused fifteen cases within 48 hours and two deaths[1]
    • A separate MenB cluster of three cases in Weymouth, Dorset, involved a different strain[11]
    • The UK's one-off MenB programme offers first doses until 31 December 2026 and second doses until 31 March 2027[14]
    • The US reported 463 meningococcal cases in 2025 (preliminary), driven largely by serogroup Y[4]
    • Penicillin- and ciprofloxacin-resistant serogroup Y strains have been detected in the US since 2019[15]
    • The January 2026 US schedule change is stayed, and CDC again lists routine MenACWY at ages 11-12[6]
    • African meningitis belt countries reported 21,526 suspected cases and 971 deaths in 2025[18]

    What we don't know yet

    • What UKHSA's genomic and immunity studies find about why the Kent outbreak spread so fast
    • Whether the JCVI will recommend routine MenB vaccination for adolescents or students after its review
    • How many eligible young people complete both MenB doses before the programme closes
    • How the First Circuit will rule on the stay of the US vaccine schedule changes
    • Whether the US serogroup Y rise continues through the 2027 winter peak

    Timeline data (JSON)

This tracker follows meningococcal outbreaks and meningitis vaccine decisions, mainly in the UK and US, with dated entries. Meningococcal disease is uncommon but serious: even with antibiotics, 10 to 15 in 100 patients die.[7] This page is not medical advice; ask a clinician whether you or your child should be vaccinated, and seek emergency care for suspected meningitis.

    England’s 2026 MenB outbreaks

England normally diagnoses about 300 to 400 meningococcal cases a year.[8] In March 2026 a MenB outbreak in Kent produced fifteen cases within 48 hours. UKHSA says most outbreaks it manages involve 2 to 4 cases over a longer period.[1] Two people died.[2] Antibiotics and vaccine were offered to close contacts, students living on the Canterbury campus and people who had visited a Canterbury nightclub between 5 and 15 March.[9] UKHSA said the risk to the wider public stayed low, because MenB needs close, prolonged contact to spread.[10] In April, three young people in Weymouth, Dorset, had MenB caused by a different strain. All were recovering.[11]

    The UK’s one-off MenB programme

In June 2026 the UK announced a time-limited MenB programme while the JCVI, its vaccine advisory committee, reviews the evidence.[3] Before the outbreaks, the JCVI did not recommend routine MenB vaccination for adolescents.[12] The programme covers 17- and 18-year-olds born between September 2007 and August 2008, and under-25s starting university or residential further education for the first time in autumn 2026.[3] UKHSA says first-year students face about 7 times the risk of peers who do not go to university.[13] First doses are available until 31 December 2026 and second doses until 31 March 2027.[14]

United States: rising cases and shifting policy

US cases have risen sharply since 2021. The CDC counted 463 in 2025 (preliminary), the second-highest total since 2013, with serogroup Y driving much of the increase.[4] The CDC has detected serogroup Y strains resistant to penicillin and ciprofloxacin since 2019.[15] On 5 January 2026 HHS moved MenACWY and MenB to high-risk groups and put meningococcal vaccination for other children under shared clinical decision-making.[5] A federal court stay on 16 March 2026 blocked that change. CDC guidance reviewed on 30 March again lists routine MenACWY at ages 11-12.[6][16] The government has appealed.[17] The arguments are set out in the policy debate page, and the wider fight over US vaccine advice is covered in the US mRNA vaccine policy debate.

    The global picture

The African meningitis belt carries the highest burden. In 2025 its surveillance network reported 21,526 suspected cases and 971 deaths.[18] A five-serogroup conjugate vaccine (Men5CV) was prequalified by WHO in 2023, and Niger ran the first Gavi-supported preventive campaign in 2025.[19] The CDC notes that Hajj and Umrah pilgrimages have been linked to outbreaks, including 6 US cases in 2024.[20]

    Questions readers ask

What happened in the Kent meningitis outbreak?

In March 2026 a MenB outbreak centred on Canterbury produced fifteen cases within 48 hours, far faster than the 2 to 4 cases typical of UK outbreaks, and two people died. UKHSA offered antibiotics and MenB vaccine to close contacts, students and visitors to a local nightclub.[1][2][9]

Who can get the free MenB vaccine in the UK?

17- and 18-year-olds born between 1 September 2007 and 31 August 2008, and under-25s starting university or residential further education for the first time in autumn 2026. First doses are available until 31 December 2026.[3][14]

Are meningococcal cases rising in the US?

Yes. The CDC says cases have risen sharply since 2021 and reached 463 in 2025 (preliminary), the second-highest count since 2013, with serogroup Y driving much of the rise.[4]

Is MenACWY still recommended for US teenagers?

CDC guidance reviewed in March 2026 recommends MenACWY for all 11- to 12-year-olds with a booster at 16. A January 2026 change that moved it to high-risk groups was blocked by a court stay in March.[16][6]
