    NVIDIA

Also known as NVIDIA Corporation, Nvidia, NVDA

NVIDIA is a US chip designer, headquartered in Santa Clara, California, whose data center business now makes up most of its revenue.[1][2] It reported $96.2 billion in revenue for the quarter ended July 26, 2026, more than double a year earlier.[3]

    Key facts

NVIDIA designs graphics processing units (GPUs), CPUs and networking hardware, including complete server racks for AI data centers.[2][4] As of its most recent quarter, which ended July 26, 2026, the company reported revenue of $96.2 billion, up 106% from a year earlier.[3] On October 29, 2025, it became the first company to reach a $5 trillion market value.[5]

    History

Jensen Huang, Chris Malachowsky and Curtis Priem founded NVIDIA on April 5, 1993.[6] The company was incorporated in California and reincorporated in Delaware in 1998.[6] Huang remains its chief executive.[7] NVIDIA is headquartered in Santa Clara, California.[1]

NVIDIA says it invented the GPU, a graphics processor, in 1999.[8] In 2006 the company introduced CUDA, which opened the parallel processing capabilities of its GPUs to a broad range of compute-intensive applications beyond graphics.[9] NVIDIA’s annual report credits CUDA with paving the way for modern AI.[9]

    Products and manufacturing

NVIDIA is a fabless company: it designs chips but relies on foundries such as TSMC and Samsung Electronics to manufacture them.[10] In its fiscal 2026 annual report, NVIDIA grouped its products into two segments. Compute & Networking covered data center computing and networking platforms, AI software and automotive platforms.[11] Graphics covered GeForce gaming GPUs and RTX workstation GPUs.[11] In August 2026 NVIDIA said its Vera Rubin data center platform was ramping into full production, with racks running at CoreWeave, Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure, Oracle Cloud Infrastructure and Nebius.[4] The company also unveiled Vera, a CPU it describes as built for AI agents.[12]

Its Blackwell GPU used TSMC’s CoWoS packaging to combine more than three reticles’ worth of silicon with eight high-bandwidth memory stacks, an example of the chiplet approach.[13] In networking, NVIDIA said by May 2026 that its Spectrum-X Ethernet Photonics switches, which use co-packaged-optics, were in production.[14] In robotics, it announced Project GR00T, a foundation model for humanoid robots, in March 2024.[15] Its Isaac GR00T platform now includes open GR00T foundation models, demonstration-capture tools and the Isaac Sim and Isaac Lab simulation tools.[16]

At the end of fiscal 2026 NVIDIA had about 42,000 employees in 38 countries. About 31,000 of them worked in research and development.[17]

    Business and finances

NVIDIA’s fiscal year ends in late January. For fiscal 2026, which ended January 25, 2026, revenue was $215.9 billion, up 65% from the year before.[18] Data Center revenue for that year rose 68% to $193.7 billion.[19]

In the second quarter of fiscal 2027, Data Center revenue was $89.0 billion, up 117% year over year. Edge Computing revenue was $7.2 billion, up 27%.[2] GAAP and non-GAAP gross margins were both 75.0%.[3] NVIDIA returned about $26.0 billion to shareholders through share buybacks and dividends during the quarter. It had $99.0 billion left under its buyback authorization and declared a quarterly dividend of $0.25 per share, payable October 1, 2026.[20] It guided third-quarter revenue of $108.0 billion, plus or minus 2%.[21] In the earnings release, Huang said, “AI has reached its inflection point,” and added, “Now, compute is revenue.”[22]

    Export controls and China

US export rules have limited NVIDIA’s sales to China.[23] In April 2025 the US government said NVIDIA needed a license to export its H20 chips to China. NVIDIA then recorded a $4.5 billion charge for H20 excess inventory and purchase obligations.[23] Its outlook for the third quarter of fiscal 2027 assumes no Data Center compute revenue from China.[21]

A US license granted in February 2026 allows small H200 shipments to specific China-based customers.[24] But NVIDIA said in August 2026 that China’s government had restricted those sales. It took a $0.4 billion H200 charge in the first half of fiscal 2027, and licensed H200 shipments made up less than 1% of its latest quarterly Data Center revenue.[25] The US AI chip export controls page tracks the rules in detail.

    Partnerships and peers

In September 2025 NVIDIA and Intel agreed to jointly develop multiple generations of custom data center and PC products. As part of the deal, NVIDIA agreed to invest $5 billion in Intel common stock at $23.28 per share.[26] Intel said the share sale was completed by the time it reported fourth-quarter 2025 results.[27] AMD also sells GPUs for data centers, under the Instinct brand.[28] AMD has signed multi-gigawatt supply agreements with OpenAI and Anthropic.[29][30]

On September 2, 2026 NVIDIA agreed to buy Hugging Face, which runs a platform for sharing open-source models, datasets and applications. The price is about $11.9 billion, plus a retention program of up to about $1.0 billion, and the deal is expected to close in the first half of 2027 if regulators approve.[31] NVIDIA committed to keep the platform open, including support for other chip vendors.[32]

    Questions readers ask

Does NVIDIA manufacture its own chips?

No. NVIDIA uses outside foundries, including TSMC and Samsung Electronics, to make its chips.[10]

    Who founded NVIDIA, and when?

Jensen Huang, Chris Malachowsky and Curtis Priem founded NVIDIA on April 5, 1993. Huang is still its CEO.[6][7]

How much of NVIDIA's revenue comes from data centers?

In the quarter ended July 26, 2026, Data Center revenue was $89.0 billion out of total revenue of $96.2 billion.[2][3]

Does NVIDIA sell data center chips in China?

US export rules have restricted sales. A license requirement for the H20 chip in April 2025 led to a $4.5 billion charge, and NVIDIA's guidance for the third quarter of fiscal 2027 assumes no Data Center compute revenue from China.[23][21]
