How the College Football Playoff works (2026-27)
The College Football Playoff is a 12-team bracket. It takes the ACC, Big Ten, Big 12 and SEC champions, the best-ranked team from the other FBS conferences, and the next seven highest-ranked teams.[1] The top four teams get byes, seeds 5-12 play first-round games on campus, and the 2027 final is on 25 January in Las Vegas.[2][3][4]
The College Football Playoff (CFP) decides the national champion in top-level (FBS) college football. It grew from four teams to 12 in 2024.[5] The format was kept for 2026-27 while conferences debate expanding it further.[6] Here is how it works this season.
Who gets in
Twelve teams make the playoff. Five places are automatic: the champions of the four biggest conferences (ACC, Big Ten, Big 12 and SEC), plus the best-ranked team from the smaller FBS conferences. The other seven places go to the highest-ranked teams left.[1] Notre Dame, which plays in no football conference, gets in if it finishes in the top 12.[7]
The 2026-27 rule changes the automatic-bid logic. In 2024 and 2025, the five highest-ranked conference champions from any conference took the automatic bids.[8] From 2026-27, four bids are reserved for the ACC, Big Ten, Big 12 and SEC champions. The fifth goes to the highest-ranked team from the American, Conference USA, MAC, Mountain West, Pac-12 or Sun Belt, whether or not that team won its league.[1][8]
Who decides the rankings
A selection committee, not the media polls, ranks the teams. It publishes a top 25 each week late in the season, then picks and seeds the 12 teams.[9] In 2026 its first rankings come out on 3 November and its final rankings on Selection Day, 6 December.[10]
The committee releases six rankings in 2026, the first on 3 November. It announces the bracket pairings and game sites with the final rankings on 6 December.[10] Arkansas athletic director Hunter Yurachek chairs the committee for 2026-27.[9] The format itself is set by the CFP Management Committee: the 10 FBS conference commissioners and Notre Dame’s athletic director.[6] Until November, the AP Top 25 is the main ranking reference. In its 4 October poll, Texas was No. 1.[11]
Seeding, byes and the bracket
The four highest-ranked teams are seeded 1 to 4 and skip the first round.[2] Seeds 5 to 12 play each other first, at the home stadium of the higher seed.[3] Winners move on to the quarterfinals and semifinals, which are played at major bowl games.[12]
Since 2025, seeds follow the committee’s ranking. In 2024 the byes went to the four highest-ranked conference champions, regardless of overall ranking.[2] With conference bowl tie-ins removed from 2026-27, the top three seeds choose their bowl path in rank order.[13] The quarterfinals and semifinals rotate among the Cotton, Fiesta, Orange, Peach, Rose and Sugar Bowls.[12]

Will the playoff grow again?
The SEC and Big Ten both favoured expansion but could not agree on a size. The SEC pushed for 16 teams and the Big Ten for up to 24.[15] On 10 October 2026 the CFP said its exclusive negotiating window with ESPN had ended, and that talks on media rights for a possible 24-team playoff were continuing.[16] No expanded format has been announced.
